How do I overcome my fear of starting a business?
This is one of the common questions I receive from my coaching clients. First of all, it is very normal that you fear of something you’ve never experienced and it is a good thing! Imagine what happens if you didn’t have fear. You’d probably make a bungee jump from a cliff without a safety rope! So fear is actually protecting you from getting hurt. Acknowledging it as a positive thing can help you see fear as a friend instead of enemy.
All successful entrepreneurs took some risk when they started their business, but they took calculated risks. Investing thousands of dollars in your first business is called gamble. Starting a business with preparation and right knowledge can reduce the risk therefore reduce fear as well. So here are my 3 tips how you can start your business without taking massive risk.
1.Learn, learn, learn – Starting a business is like a driving a car. If you start driving a car without learning, it’s so dangerous and even fatal. So first invest your time and money to learn. One of the most important skills in business is sales & marketing. Many people start business without knowing how to sell, therefore most of the business fail. The great news is that you can learn! You can take up a course, seminar, boot camp, sales job, internship or even work in a network marketing company which is the “best business school” according to Robert Kiyosaki, the author of his best-selling book ‘Rich Dad Poor Dad’. Investing your time and money in learning can save so much money and time from doing it by yourself and learning it in a hard way.
2.Test your idea – Never invest a lot of money on your first business idea! When my husband was starting up his first business, a bank told him that they would loan some money but later they withdrew that decision. He was so angry and disappointed but later he realized it was a blessing. Because it forced him to learn how to make money without money. If you can make money without money, you are guaranteed to make money with money. Before investing a lot of money, test your idea. For example, you can create a simple website to pre-sell before creating your products or organizing an event and see how many people would really pay for it.
3.Surround yourself with positive and inspiring people – You’re the average of seven people you spend the most time with. Be with the people who live a kind of life you would like to live and get mentored by them. Being with the people who have done what you’re trying to do help you believe in your dreams and gain confidence.
If there is no fear, there is no growth. Everything you want, whether it’s more happiness, freedom or money, come from doing something you’ve never done. If you want a different future, you have to get out of the comfort zone and do something differently. So fear is a good thing – it’s a sign that something great is going to happen!
