“How can I get my husband (partner)’s support on my business?” – this is one of the common questions I receive from my mentoring clients.

Starting and running your own business takes not only time and financial commitment, but also emotional commitment and it makes it easier if your husband (partner) is fully at your back. But it’s not the case all the time.

So what can you do when you find that your husband (partner) is skeptical about your business if it’s worth your time and investment? Here are my tips.

1. Find out what his real concern is. According to my mentor who is a man, husband and father himself, the real problem is often ‘control’ issue instead of financial or something more logical. Maybe he feels deep down that he is not providing for his family sufficiently or afraid how other people might think.

Having talked with so many couples with different culture and background, a strong influence comes from his parents. If his mom worked or had a business and his dad supported her venture, it’s likely that he also supports his wife or partner do the same.

Having said that, invite him for a date night and have an open conversation in relaxed environment. Find out what his real concern is. He may not tell you some of his deepest fear or he may not even know what it is, so it’s not a straight answer, but try to assure him that you love and respect him no matter what.

2. Get him involved! If his concern is more on the profitability of the business, present him a business plan and work together to improving it! When it comes to a business, men tend to have more logical approach than women. Men tend to set his goal first then decide a business model to reach his goal. Women tend to focus on what we can do or like, then find out how to build a business around it.

To create a successful business, you need both. Doing what you love is important, but setting a goal first and choosing a right business model to reach your goal is critical to create a business that not only survives, but thrives.

3. Accept it – Let me ask you. Why do you need his support? Women tend to look for someone’s opinion or approval before making a decision. But you two are different human being and it’s normal that you have different opinion. If his support is stopping you from pursuing your business idea, maybe you will find other obstacles stop you even if you start your business.

To create a successful business, you need a ‘do-whatever-it-takes’ spirit. Do you have a burning desire to take a leap? When your husband (partner) really sees that fire and spirit in you, he may start to change. That’s what happened to many successful women entrepreneurs.  But for that you must the one who initiate the change instead of waiting for all the lights to be green.

If you wait until all the lights are ” green” before you leave home, you’ll never get started on your trip to the top.” – Zig Ziglar
